What should the groom wear?
When it comes to what a groom and his entourage should wear at a wedding is not overly complicated. Ideally the groom, best man, ushers etc. should all look similar (normally the groom has an open flower in the lapel to look different). So for example if the groom is wearing morning dress then the other men in the party should follow suit.
Following is a list of items recommended for both a black tie and smart dress wedding. If your wedding is highland dress we recommend you check the appropriate section.
Grooms clothing
In the past (unless you were fairly well off) men did not have much choice but to hire their tuxedos. However over the last decade the cost of a tuxedo has plummeted and you can now buy a full outfit along with shirt, bow tie and cummerbund for a little over £100.
If you intend to buy a dinner suit then check out our recent list of top dinner suit retailers. You’ll see reviews by the likes of M&S, MyTuxedo, Moss Bros and more.
The dinner suit
THE DINNER SUIT aka TUXEDO is made up of a black, single breasted suit with lapels (the white jacket is saved for more tropical climbs). The trouser have no cuffs or belt loops and have a single silk braid.
The shirt is a white dress shirt with wing collar. You’ll find most mens dress shirts traditionally have a marcella effect that can be pleated or plain. The bow tie should be black (either self-tie or pre-tied is acceptable).
Other accessories should include a cummerbund (normally black or maroon) or waistcoat, cufflinks (steer clear of the novelty ones) and smart black shoes, we recommend a polished pair of brogues.
The wedding suit
There are a large number of retailers who sell smart wedding suits for men. Ideally the suit you choose should have the same colour scheme to ushers and best man. When it comes to accessories a smart wedding tie, crisp shirt with smart polished shoes will suffice.
