Natural disasters can have a devastating effect. Even the most developed cities can be reduced to ruins by a high magnitude disaster. Disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, tornadoes etc can be terrifying. No one can afford to count and rely on the city’s infrastructure in such circumstances. Having some basic knowledge on the common kinds of disasters and taking preventive measures would be a wise idea. The human mind would be terrified in cases of calamities and in the absence of a well thought out plan; we would be totally clueless regarding how to combat the situation. A well framed out disaster management plan is therefore a must.
Earthquakes
The extent and magnitude of an earthquake is measured on the Richter scale. A magnitude of beyond five on the scale can have very terrifying and disastrous effects. There is nothing that can be done to prevent such calamities from occurring. All that we can do is to adequately safeguard ourselves. Earthquake preparedness kits can be used to protect ourselves and cope up with the disaster, till the rescue efforts. Earthquake preparedness kits basically contain vital requirements such as drinking water, adequate stock of non-perishable food, first aid requirements and certain important accessories.
Tornadoes
A tornado can have a devastating effect and leave the entire place totally devastated. Certain areas are more prone to tornado attacks. Almost every place in the US has been a victim of tornadoes. There is nothing we can do to prevent such calamities from occurring. The only thing which lies in our hands is to take precautionary and protective measures. It is very important that certain measures are thought of in advance to equip ourselves in such circumstances.
Firstly, plan a place to take shelter along with your family. The ground areas or basements would be a safer place to retreat to. In case you do not have such an area think of a safe room to take shelter in. Have adequate first aid supplies and the basic stationery. Most importantly, all the family members must be aware of the plan and must know what exactly to do in such circumstances.
A good weather radio would be very useful in times of such calamities. This would help us stay connected with the proceedings and situation. The broadcasts can be very informative and helpful to reassure and pacify us.
Having adequate stock of water and food supply is a must to handle any such natural disaster. Most importantly we must not panic and stick to the pre-defined plan, till the rescue operations are executed successfully.
