There are different ways on how photovoltaic solar power works. Mainly, the different methods can be grouped into two main categories—discrete cell technology and integrated thin film technology.
Discrete cell technology involves single crystal silicon and multicrystalline silicon. Single crystal silicon is able to produce photovoltaic solar power through the process of growing silicon and slicing single crystal boles from it. The cells are created as thin as 200 microns. For multicrystalline silicon, blocks of cast silicon is sliced. This is less efficient in producing photovoltaic energy compared to single crystal silicon.
Integrated thin film technology involves the use various combination of elements to come up with cells that can generate photovoltaic solar power. Because of varying materials, the efficiency of the cells may differ too. For example, copper indium diselenide has 17.7% efficiency. Amorphous silicon is the typical cell used for smaller gadgets like watches and calculators. When used in bigger scale, this can also work for providing power for building by replacing the window glass with semi-transparent modules.
Photovoltaic Solar Power for Industries
A lot of industries today are also relying on photovoltaic solar energy. Because of the efficient production of usable electricity, even the complex mechanisms within industries can be powered by the sun. The system can be incorporated within the main power grid or it could also be designed as stand alone. By using the energy from the sun, the industries have become more environment friendly and the overhead costs are significantly reduced too.
Among the main industries that use photovoltaic solar power are telecommunications companies, oil corporations, and highway and safety management. What is good about utilizing solar power for such industries is that they are able to set up their equipment and machineries even in locations which are not yet reached by mainstream power lines. The sun provides constant and reliable electricity.
Here are some of the examples of industrial equipment which work by using photovoltaic solar power.
Call Boxes: Roadside call boxes also require electricity. These are connected to small scale solar panels which provide sufficient electricity for the phone to work. Even if the call box is located in a remote area, it can still be powered up. It also eradicates the need to install lengthy wirings and cables.
Telecommunicaton Receivers and Installations: These are the structures which are usually placed on top of mountains or hills to spread signal and collect telecommunication data. The solar panels also provide energy for such structures.
Roadside Lights and Signage: Proper lighting and road warnings are needed for highways especially during the night. Installing solar powered systems within these fixtures avoids the need for generators and complex power lines.
The photovoltaic solar power can be a really good source of alternative electricity. Its benefits are not just limited to providing energy for homes. Because of how effectively it works, even the industries are already utilizing this technology to be able to reduce the need to use mainstream electricity. The expenses of the companies are reduced and the natural resources are also conserved.
