Therapists are trained professional listeners who assist people determine the cause of a person's problems, overcome mental challenges, and make good changes in life. A person does not need to have a mental health problem to gain benefits from counseling. Therapy can be sought by an individual also for premarital and couples counseling.
A good therapist should be able to listen, can support an individual identify and comprehend damaging thoughts and behaviors. A therapist should be capable of helping other people effect positive changes in their life. The person that needs help has to do more effort than the therapist to make life changes. He or she must be able to make the person needing counseling get involved in the therapy process. The person under therapy should make sure he or she knows and understands the expected outcome and how to determine if the therapy is working.
To start choosing a therapist, couples can ask recommendations from their family doctor. The web is also a good channel to search but the couple's best option is still personal visits and appointments. Use the consultation time to confirm the therapist's experience and credibility. Both spouses should feel at ease the relationship therapist they get is experienced so he or she can do his or her part well during the therapy sessions.
