2017 was an exciting year for men’s hairstyles. This year saw the continuation of many popular styles from previous years, such as the quiff, long hairstyles with thick beards, undercut fades, and the resurgence of middle parting.
Perhaps the most notable (and surprising) trend of 2017 was the popularisation of what is typically one of the most dreaded signs of ageing. With the New Year just around the corner, let’s take a look at the hairstyles that not only defined 2017, but will certainly be around for 2018 and beyond.
Evolution of the Undercut
Since its revival in the early 2010’s, the undercut has evolved beyond the classic ‘trimmed sides and slick back’ look and incorporated elements of the pompadour, the French crop, and the quiff. Its low maintenance and versatility has made it one of the most desirable hairstyles for men with short to medium hair.
What has stayed consistent is the short length sides and back. If you’re lucky enough to find a talented barber, you can even enhance the look with a fade or multi-layered effect. For a casual or messy look, try keeping the fringe and crown long, so you can part it all the way back or let it hang loose on the side.
The Quiff
A diverse, timeless and sophisticated look that complements a range of men’s styles and hair types. According to research, it’s also one of the sexiest hairstyles as rated by women.
What makes the quiff different from the undercut? Instead if short trimmed sides, the length is kept at medium length while the crown and fringe are much longer than usual. This extra length gives you the freedom to experiment with different textures, partings and styles. For a more rugged appearance, use your hands to rough up the strands and change the overall direction of the part.
Creating this iconic look is also easy. Simply make the hair wet and apply wax, mousse or gel. Slick your hair to the side or backwards and use a hairdryer to establish the desired shape. If you have longer hair or want to hide a distracting bald spot, let it hang loosely on the side for a distinctive look.
Middle Parting
Also known as the ‘curtain haircut, this hairstyle was hugely popular in the 1990’s before being shunned for most of the 2000’s. With the rise of indie culture and a more laidback attitude to men’s hairstyles, parting down the middle has been embraced once again.
If you’re looking to transition away from the man bun, this is a great alternative for men with longer hair. Best of all, you don’t need to use a lot of products and it takes very little time to achieve the desired look.
Simply use a comb to create a part down the middle. Place some wax or hair cream into your hands, then run your fingertips along each side to achieve full coverage. For a messier or casual appearance, use your hands to roughen up the strands and establish a wavy effect.
French Crop
If a Caesar cut is a bit too ‘uptight’ for you, the French crop is a distinct and low maintenance choice.
While the Caesar cut has a short fringe, the French crop presents new stylistic options by keeping the fringe long. Many of the same styles used for the undercut can be applied here, which makes the French crop perfect for men who aren’t comfortable with trimming off their sides. This stylistic freedom means you can part the fringe to the side or the back, or let it hang loosely on the front.
Going Grey
Who would’ve predicted that going grey would be one of the biggest trends of recent years? The warning signs were there. For years, older male celebrities such as George Clooney, Pierce Brosnan and Richard Gere have been admired for their mature and sophisticated appearance. Okay, those guys already have the good looks to back, but they have been helping change the public perception of going grey for some time now.
But only recently has this shift transitioned to young people. In 2017, celebrities such as Zayn Malik, Kim Kardashian and Mark Ronson made the transition to platinum/grey simply because they liked the look. What was once (and for most people, still is) one of the most dreaded signs of ageing, has become a dramatic fashion statement.
If you’re looking to earn the title of the ‘silver fox,’ be sure to tread carefully and seek professional advice. Not all grey/ silver treatment is equal and using the wrong products can be disastrous. Consult a local hairdresser who can guide through the process and help you choose the right products.
After you’ve found the perfect colour, follow the instructions closely and follow-up the treatment with a rinsing colour and gentle washing routine. This will help to prevent bleaching and preserve the grey or silver’s natural qualities.
