The concept of angels has always been a fascination, and cherubs have a part in many world religions. They are said to have hold up the throne and the chariot of God. They are also said to have formed the mercy seat on the Ark of the Covenant. Other scriptures tell us that they are protectors or guardians of the Gates of Eden. They were placed there to keep humans from re-entering the Garden of Eden.

In Jewish and Christian religion they hold the rank of second place in the hierarchy of angels, following the seraphim. Though in myth they have four wings and four faces -- a bull, lion, eagle, and human -- in cherub decorations they usually have chubby faces with rosy cheeks and look like infants. They are often clothed in blue.
