The term 'cheap drum sets' doesn't necessarily mean that you need to sacrifice quality in order to find your dream kit. Think in terms of value for your money and consider your skill level, needs, and basic requirements when searching for cheap drum sets. You can even search out fantastic deals on drum kits and add a few upgrades, maybe cymbals, or hardware; and then turn around and re-sell the cheap drum set for a great profit.
All top manufacturers such as Ludwig, Pearl, Tama, Gretsch, Yamaha, and many others will have cheap drum sets available and can be found in either new or used kits. Many experienced drummers will even go as far as stating that purchasing a cheap used drum set will often times give you a better sound than a brand new drum set because they may already be tuned and well seasoned.
Searching online at auction sites such as eBay for cheap drum sets will open up a huge variety of options. I personally, have picked up 2 cheap drum sets from sellers on eBay and believe I received great value for my money. One set was a brand new 7 piece kit (don't remember the brand, but it wasn't a top level brand name), and the second was a 5 piece used Pacific (by DW) set. Each one cost between $350 and $400 including shipping and I was very happy with the sound quality of the drums.
With my own experience in mind, it's not always necessary to stick to the well known brand names as you should keep in mind that I use the term 'cheap' in this discussion with reference to the price; not the quality. You don't need to sacrifice quality, tone, and durability just because you may have a limited budget available and therefore have a need to find a cheap drum set.
Many times, cheap drum sets which are not the Top level A+ brands such as the ones mentioned above are priced low because they may include cheap cymbals or hardware (referring to quality here) :-) that are really only included to allow the seller to say that it is a complete set. This is alright really; as you can grab a cheap drum set to get the feel or even learn the basics and then replace the generic hardware and cymbals as your budget allows. The drums themselves may be great quality but are sold cheap due to the poor quality of the cymbals or accessories. This isn't always the case, but it may be something to keep in mind.
One of the main things to look out for when purchasing a cheap drum set is kind of obvious but shouldn't be assumed. Any sign of warp will obviously take from the sound quality. This is usually only a concern when buying a used drum set; mainly because you never really know how the set has been treated or where it was stored.
It is very realistic to be able to find good quality cheap drum sets for sale; you only need to shop around, use common sense and - above all - don't be afraid to ask questions.
