Self hypnosis is a proven method of managing pain and reducing stress. If you want to try it, here are some guidelines to follow:

Do not try too hard. A big part of learning self hypnosis is letting the hypnotic state take over by itself (rather than making it happen). Do not overanalyze everything that is happening -- just relax and let the feeling develop from within. Don’t be discouraged if your hypnotic development seems to be too slow. After practicing for quite some time, you will be able to keep your mind focused on the task at hand.

Do not compare notes. Remember that there are various ways to experience hypnosis. No two people can have exactly the same hypnotic experience. Just because your experience is different from another person’s doesn’t mean you are doing anything wrong.

Practice until perfect. It’s a good idea to set aside regular time to practice. Allow yourself ten to thirty minutes everyday, depending on how much time you can spare. Practice at a time when you will not be disturbed.

Some people are surprised when they find out that they need to be awake when they practice self-hypnosis. Hypnosis is very different from sleep. If you have trouble staying awake while practicing, use some kind of suggestion to stop you from sleeping.

During hypnosis, some people find it best to practice lying down. This may not be the case for you, so find a comfortable position with as few distractions as possible. Try putting on music in the background if you prefer.

Lastly, remember that the basic divisions of a hypnotic induction are relaxation, deepening, suggestion application and termination. Try following these guidelines when you practice self-hypnosis, and you’ll have a pleasant hypnotic experience.
