A common mistake most people make when they are looking for a job and are trying decided if they will take an offer is not to ask for a job description. When you decide to start a job search one of factors you should take into consideration is what your job duties will be. Most people feel that asking for a job description is being pushy and will hinder their chance of getting the job.

Actually most employers will gladly give you a full job description if you ask for it. It shows the employer that you have an interest in the job and that you will not take a job that is not suited for your skill set. This will also give you leverage in negotiating salary when the time comes.

An accurate job description will take all of the guess work out of equation for you. When you accept the job, I am sure there will be instances in course of a work day that you will do things that do not fall under your job description but if you know what is expected of you than it is your decision if you want to take part. When these instances do arise than you are more than justified in explaining that according to your job description you were not hired to perform this task.

It is absolutely o.k. to be a team player and help out when there is a need to get a task performed that you can help accomplish. But remember, you were hired and are compensated based on your job task. If you are constantly performing task that fall outside of your job description than have a conversation with your manager and let them know that you expect to be compensated for the work, but do it nicely.

If you decide to make a job change than you will not be credited with work that falls outside of your job description and your compensation may suffer.

Do yourself a favor and ask for a job description before accepting a job offer this will only help you in the long run.
