Especially with your office, space management is a very important factor as a cluttered, unplanned space will result in an unkempt look and impact negatively on the productivity of employees. At the same time it also leaves a very poor impression on the visitors and clients thereby harming your business.

Whether you have a small office or a big one, space planning is important in either case. While a large office space which is not planned properly will give an unmanaged, scattered look, a small office space which is not planned will look cluttered and suffocating.

There are a number of ways in which you can plan you office space, however the best one of those is utilizing it through well planned and carefully chosen furniture. Now by furniture I do not just mean the chairs and the tables of the office. It includes all those plus the storage cabinets, visitor’s area lounges and reception desks etc.

Space Evaluation

The first thing you need to is your space evaluation. That is saying evaluating how big or small your office space is compared to the nature of work done there. You could be having a large space or a small one. You can work towards optimum utilization of whatever space is available through the correctly planned and designed furniture. The kinds of materials that you use in the furniture are also responsible to a large extent in the space planning. Once you evaluate whether you have a large or a small space compared to your work needs and what is the architectural shape of the space, you can move ahead with furniture planning.

Furniture for a Large Space

The problem with a large space is that of optimum utilization. You can end up having a scattered and sparsely arranged office if you do not manage it well. The kind of furniture most suited for a large office space is bulky, heavy furniture that gives a sense of fullness to the room. Large, king size tables and high back chairs can prove to be a right choice. The materials that you can use are wood or steal with elaborate upholstery and rich textures. Even the storage cabinets can be designed elaborately with multi cabinets and ornate carvings. The desks can be beefy and seemingly difficult to move. You can have cushioned and sumptuous sofas in the waiting lounge with large coffee tables. All in all, furniture that provides a sense of well occupied space suits large areas well.

Furniture for Small Spaces

Breezy furniture with clean lines and a light appearance is most right for a small space. You need to keep in mind that you are already short on space and bringing in more of anything would only enhance the chaos. So aim at keeping it simple. You should look for light weight office furniture in laminated surfaces and aluminum edgings. Other materials that you can use are wrought iron (not the ornate cast iron furniture more suited for gardens!), clear glass and some amount of steel. Avoid using heavy fabrics and textures for upholstery. The idea should be to have furniture that lets air pass through it and does not coagulate the vision.

Keep the cabinetry in light shades of laminates and do not use complicated geometrical patterns on it for designs. Usage of too many colors in the furniture’s laminates or fabrics also results in a visual chaos. Using a monochromatic color scheme for furniture and cabinetry will enhance a sense of openness of space.

With a little bit of careful planning and choice of right furniture will soon result in a great looking office space. Not only is the selection of furniture important but also is important its placement. Once you keep the basics of furniture choice and placement in mind, you can have an office space that leaves a positive impression not only on your clients mind but also provides a positive energy for the employees.
