Log Home Décor

A log home is a rustic retreat, a haven from the plastic molded world of flashing lights and buzzing sounds. The essence of such a structure is to be a part of nature itself, rather than standing in stark opposition to the natural world, as so many manmade objects do. The way that you decorate this space will depend largely on your own personality. However there is a philosophy that goes along with a log home, and which should at least be considered when making decisions about how to dress the interior of such a space.
The structure of a log home by definition is rustic and natural, being made up of hardwood logs and planks. The fact that it has this skeleton means that it will be difficult to bring modern amenities into the space without having them look at odds with the rest of the interior.
However log home enthusiast Alan D., warns that just because you are decorating a log home doesn’t means that you have to give up modern amenities. According to him "a home has a different context to many folks". He says that he wont give up his sleek granite countertops, nor will he give up modern electronics such as a wireless router, just because the traditional log home is supposed to be simple and quaint.
Brad answered Alan on LogHomeU by saying that "we are very high tech - but you do not have to see it. With wireless support and powerline adapters we have multiple networks in the house and garage all connected together" According to him you can still have most modern conveniences just take a little time and effort to conceal them behind more rustic or traditional furnishings.
This kind of back and forth is the real essence of any decorating discussion. Since decorating is an art, everyone will see the beauty of the space differently. Some people will actually get offended by the idea that a log home has to look a certain, specific way.
Another interesting point was brought up by Jere Jaakola who stressed the importance of having meaning in your possessions. He said "if all the furniture and decorative details have some kind of a story to tell, it makes it my home". That is a powerful statement, as meaning is always the strength behind any work of art, including interior decoration.
In the end the discussion can really be summed up best by saying that each individual will have to find their own personal vision for how to decorate their log home. However, modern fixtures such as stainless steal, and electronic devices, are going to stick out in a rustic environment. One way to deal with this, is to integrate these items into the décor of the rest of the room, either by hiding them behind more natural, or traditional furnishings, or simply placing them in points which are not prominent, or noticeable.
