A callus is a protective thickening of the skin that develops due to recurrent friction and pressure. Most calluses are found on the ball of the foot or on the heel; although, calluses can form in other places on the foot. The callus forms to insulate and protect the balls of the feet or other areas on the feet against the abnormal bony pressure. Footwear is commonly blamed for the formation of calluses, but often, calluses are most usually caused from over-pronation. Over-pronation is excessive looseness of the foot to the degree that it causes poor foot alignment and balance.

Calluses are parts of the skin that have become toughened and thick due to constant pressure and contact. For some people, having callused skin, especially on the hands or areas that are frequently touched by others, can make one very self-conscious. It's not that calluses are a cause of embarrassment - it's just that with today's standard of beauty, having soft skin (especially for women) is a must.

Calluses are not really harmful to you; they're quite the opposite, actually. Calluses are the body's way of defending your skin against the pressure and friction that is subjected to it. Without calluses, your body would be prone to lacerations and infection. Think how uncomfortable and painful it would be to have the soles of your feet shredded every time you run or you grimace in pain every time you lift rough, heavy objects. The calluses are there to protect you by toughening you up.

Some people claim that their families have always suffered from calluses, cracks, or dry feet. One of our clients, Ty, suffered from calluses most of his life. Because of the extreme calluses on his feet he was unable to try out for professional football. Although he was a great player in college, he was told that a team could not take on the liability of his feet. Ty’s grandfather, father, uncle, sister, nephews, and daughters all suffer from the same problem—wherever their feet have pressure (the toes, the ball of the foot, the side of the foot, or the heels) calluses appear, sometimes up to ¼ inch thick resulting in great pain.

It is understandable how; with 56% of clients that have gone to a doctor for a scalpel treatment and have had their calluses come back, finding a cure may seem like a lost cause. Our experience shows that when one cuts the skin or even shave off dry skin, the body reacts like it would to any other cut and starts to heal itself by growing replacement skin that is tougher and drier.
