Welcome,
in this article I am going to familiarize you to the topic of hypnotic susceptibility, what is it and how can it be impacted. hypnotic susceptibility is an ability to go into hypnotic trance. If you would ask a hypnotist "how many people can be hypnotized", most of them would say that you can hypnotize most of population. The ease of which you will be hypnotized is largely a issue of emotional state you are in when you are getting hypnotized, but it isn't the dominant factor in play. Often the same person can go into a very deep trance, but another day he/she can only get into a very shallow one or can't go into it at all.
However there are also opposite cases. We encounter unexpected shifts in hypnotic susceptibility, one day certain person can't get hypnotized no matter what and the other he is incredibly responsive. We have to also mention that people that get hypnotized are "learning" how to go into deep trance, and therefore it is getting easier and easier for them, to go into it, every time they try. Of course there are exceptions to this rule. According to one of the most honored hypnotists in the world, only 5% of people can't be hypnotized and their insensitiveness is temporary. Deepest trance is achieved by roughly 25% of population, the rest of the people achieve transitional states of it.
It seems like Some of the hypnotists can push their patients into deeper trance than their colleagues, it may be caused by better attitude than the others, but many hypnotists seem to agree that, the venue in which the client is getting hypnotized is very critical. One of the well-known hypnotists Bemheim said, that when he hypnotized his patients in hospital as much as 80% of them entered deep hypnotic trance, but in their personal houses he was able to get into deep trance only 20% of them.
hypnotic susceptibility isn't a issue of gender, education or intelligence. It is much more about:
-
age - young people in age section of 5 - 17, are much more receptive to hypnosis
-
relation between hypnotists and patient(disbelief and negative emotions towards hypnotists can ruin positive effects of the therapy)
-
expectations of the patient as to how hypnosis and hypnotist should look like
Also people that are very deep sleepers, ones who waken up in the middle of the night have trouble differentiating reality from a dream, tend to be more susceptible to hypnosis.
I hope this article made you understand that susceptibility to hypnosis isn't a fixed value, you are born with. It depends on many factors that can easily change and with them, the way you react to hypnosis. So if you tried hypnosis in the past but it didn't work, maybe try to change environment in which it was performed or the way to think about it. Nonetheless, I wish you luck with your hypnotic adventure and satisfying results.
