Green Tea has become the latest buzzword in terms of good health. Its nutritional and medical benefits have in fact, been discovered in China and Japan several thousands of years ago, but has just recently become popular in the West. Containing just a quarter of the caffeine found in coffee, green tea made from unfermented tea leaves retains all its nutrients by going through the least amount of processing.
What's In a Cup?
But the most important advantage of drinking green tea is for its antioxidant properties. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals in our bodies. Free radicals are naturally occurring compounds that can attack and deteriorate cells they can be enhanced by lifestyle habits such as smoking, overexposure to the sun and pollution.. By doing this, free radicals can thus speed up the aging process.
Green tea also contains vitamins A, C, and E as well as compounds called Flavonoids that promote good health. These Flavonoids, called Polyphenols, act as antioxidants that can help counter the aging process. There is a sub-group of Polyphenols called Catechins and one specific type of Catechin called EGCG or Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG), is found in abundance in Green tea. This is an antioxidant that is said to be nearly twenty times stronger than Vitamin E. A single cup of green tea contains 200 milligrams of Catechins, the nutritional benefits of which are equal to consuming eight fresh apples. And since the concentration of EGCG is the highest in Green tea as compared to other antioxidant rich foods such as garlic, kale, spinach and Brussels sprouts and twice as effective as the antioxidant Resveratrol found in red wine, drinking several cups a day is highly recommended.
But, you are not only getting a healthy dose of Catechins with your cup of green tea. You are getting a whole lot more by way of Gallic acid, another strong antioxidant, Carotenoids, Ascorbic acid (vitamin C), Tocopherols, and minerals such as chromium, manganese, selenium, zinc and certain phytochemical compounds all of which contribute to better health.
How Do the Antioxidants in Green Tea help?
By drinking a cup of green tea you are increasing the antioxidant capacity of your blood. The Polyphenols in Green tea help boost your white blood cell count as well aiding recovery and medical treatments. Along with a balanced diet and a regular exercise program, drinking Green tea daily can only help increase the odds of avoiding any illness associated with free radicals. As Green tea is water soluble, if you consume too much tea, you simply excrete it naturally.. Therefore there is no harm in drinking as many cups of green tea as you want. In fact, in order to promote healthy metabolism, boost your immunity and increase the antioxidants in your body, experts suggest you drink a minimum of five to six cups a day!
