The Red Fridays Foundation of Canada is requesting that everyone wear something red each and every Friday in support of the men and women who serve our country in the military. A non-partisan organization, the RFFC was founded in 2006 by Brian Muntz in order to show fellow Canadians that "we care and honor those who fought for our freedom, our peace, our resolve." They do not support any particular political agenda or the nature of a military mission, and do not operate as a charity. Rather, they are registered as a private foundation whose business activity is public awareness.
The organization sells pins, badges, bumper stickers, magnets and clothing in order to help spread the word and to cover advertising costs. As just one example of a fundraising effort, the RFFC sponsored a Repatriation Memorial Drive in 2008. Over 1,000 trucks, cars, buses and motorcycles were driven from Trenton to Toronto along the Highway of Heroes to pay tribute to current Canadian service men and women as well as veterans. Twelve thousand dollars was raised and the money donated to the Canadian Hearing Society. It will be used in their Hearing Care Counseling program that helps people adapt to their hearing loss and continue to lead independent lives. They hope to teach veterans with hearing loss the skills they need to live safely at home and to be able to communicate with family and friends.
The foundation cannot make donations directly to the military and they discourage people from giving money directly to them. However, with the proceeds from the sale of the pins, badges, etc., and from sponsoring various events, they are able to send out press releases to the media, sponsor multi-media publishing and advertising, cover event costs such as permits and staffing, and continue their Web presence and electronic marketing. All of the staff serves on a volunteer basis.
The Red Fridays Foundation Website, www.redfridays.ca, hopes to offer everyone who supports the movement a common portal on which to publicize their events, and they will also provide assistance in organizing them. In addition, they publish memorials on the site for all soldiers who have given their lives for Canada recently.
Perhaps the Wear Red on Friday's campaign will spread to countries all over the world in an effort to support troops serving their country and to help promote world peace.
