Dining Tables are a kind of furniture that is often used as a space to eat. Usually a person would sit with the table to eat a meal. Objects can be stored within the table to aid this process. Most tables are made of metal, plastic or wood. Almost every home has a table with some even having one in most rooms.
Since the dawn of civilization there has been a need for furniture. The vestige of furniture has been uncovered at archeological excavations across the planet. The Egyptians drew pictures of furniture on the walls of their monuments. Furniture feature heavily in the writings of the ancient Greeks. Likewise, the Romans spent gigantic amounts on the ornate items that their dwellings were littered with.
The cultural height of furniture was possibly the eighteenth century. At this time artisans were able to have a free hand in the design of their own furniture. The result was that they became very rich. This new wealth meant that they could finance their own businesses. This was the dawn of a new age of creativity. Lots objects from this time are admired by antiques specialists.
Furniture was often made out of the resources that were easily available. Wood is the early example, which was used primarily for its versatility. Stone was also used on occasion. The Romans and the Greeks used to make tables and plinths out of stone. Using metal was much more uncommon, as this would have been expensive and unnecessary. One exception to this would be gold, which has been used in decoration for millennia. The development of synthetic materials in the last hundred years had lead to them being used in place of more natural materials.
Appliances would follow furniture, but still had ancient origins. There is a difference between appliances and furniture. Furniture could be defined as an object which makes living more comfortable. Appliances could be defined as an object that makes a job easier or makes living more enjoyable. The earliest appliances included both eating utensils and the most basic of cooking facilities. Nowadays appliances have expanded to encompass televisions, dish washers, refrigerators, washing machines, radios and toaster ovens.
Televisions, radios and other electronic gadgets became more and more popular in the twentieth century. The explosion in consumerism led to appliances becoming more of a way of life, as opposed to being just functional items. The desire to have status symbols still lingers. It appears that there is always a need for objects that distinguish us from others.
The PC is an even more recent development to home life. The PC was born in the 1970s, gaining popularity in the 1980s. It has already made a big impact on home life. The PC has expanded to include peripherals like the printer, the web cam and the modem. An owner of a PC can now get in touch with almost anyone that they want to. Two thirds of homes in the world have access to some sort of computer. It is fast becoming the most important tool of the modern age.
What follows is a list of a few kinds of furniture and appliances. Chairs, power drills, tables, desks, shelves, fire places, telephones. Televisions, freezers, refrigerators, wardrobes, microwaves, toasters, sandwich toasters, washing machines, coffee machines. Sofas, cabinets, computers, fax machines, printers, kettles, dish washers, shoe horns, blenders, tumble dryers, radios, ect.
