We oftentimes hear about setting professional boundaries, setting copyright boundaries, setting boundaries with our children and so on. We are also aware of territorial borders, governmental barriers or borders, county, state or city borders, international boundaries, water boundaries, air space boundaries and all sorts of other borders. Hence, we come to realize and understand that we just can’t escape borders and barriers. Whatever we do and wherever we may go, we encounter barriers or borders of some kind. Setting boundaries is a normal and common expression that we hear almost each and every day of our lives. We hear of our need or other people’s needs to set personal boundaries; an invisible dividing line drawn between other people and ourselves which represents the point where our own private space starts and where our public space ends, so to speak.

While living in time, the majority of us try to respect different boundaries as they are set by diverse entities. There are times that we might overstep our bounds every now and then and may suffer whatever effect or aftermath it might take on. Still, we remain in time and continue on with our life as usual. The boundary which we hear about less often is that boundary between time and eternity. Death is after all the greatest divide of it all. It's the line which separates the living and the dead. When we cross this boundary, we enter the domain of the unknown.

When we already cross this boundary, we stop being occupants or dwellers of time and become denizens of eternity. So when we cross the boundary of time, there is no coming back to life as usual. Death is the surrendering of life as we owe it to God at His pleasure and by His will and divine authority and not just an accident. God has already fixed the boundaries of our earthly lifetime beyond which we can’t pass. This borderline is the end of our existence in time. Therefore we might just as well accept the fact that our whole life is a steady series and succession through time.

Some of us would go through at a snail’s pace while some of us will travel through at a quicker and advanced speed yet all of us are going and moving towards that cessation of human existence on earth. Life is still a constant and continuous journey towards the terminus of existence. For every death, we are caused or compelled to feel how close we, the living, are to the realm of the dead and the unknown. With every death, is the ever present reminder of our terminus in our own journey someday. So regardless of how difficult we try to control it, deny it, fight with it, we can’t avoid it.

There is just a step between the terminus of time and the origin or genesis of eternity. It befits us then to be concerned about how we make use of our time while we still live in it.
