Isla Mujeres

Situated on the coast of Mexico, Isla Mujeres (Island of Women) is the eastern most point in Mexico eight miles east of Cancun beach and has become a favourite of tourists in recent years for its beauty and seclusion. Discovered in 1517 by Spanish explorer Francisco Cordova, Isla Mujeres was a Mayan settlement cherished for its lagoons that provided salt for the ancient culture. It was sanctuary for the Mayan goddess Ixchel and was considered sacred ground. The island was a vacation hot spot to the locals long before any of the other adjoining locations were developed and gained popularity over the years as a resort for its pristine white sands and friendly local atmosphere. For centuries it remained a sleepy fishing village and only recently has become a major tourist attraction.

The island has become famous for its captivating landscapes and friendly inhabitants. The climate of Isla Mujeres is well suited for vacationers as it stays a fairly constant 75- 80 degrees year round. A highly recommended hotel is the Privilege Aluxes planted right in the middle of snow white beaches and tropical breezes as close to town as you can get without being there. It is noted for its hospitality and impeccable service that the locals provide for their guests but there are various Isla Mujeres hotels to choose from. The views from this quaint island are truly breathtaking; one only needs to look out across the panoramic to experience an awe inspiring vision.

The activities that are available may be too numerous to cover in just one stay. Fishing and snorkeling are mainstays on any of the Cancun beach vacation spots. Day long boat trips can be taken that sail up and down the coast stopping along the way for shopping excursions and beach buffet lunches. A unique feature of this part of the world is the opportunity to swim with the dolphins, many visitors are captivated by the chance to frolic with these smiling, friendly creatures, the more adventurous can even get up close and personal with the sharks indigenous to the region.

Isla Mujeres hotels dot the landscape and are varied from rustic spacious to multi leveled structures that are sleek and modern. Sundays in Mexico are family days and no work is done and families can always be spotted enjoying time together on the beaches.
