What most people know about sulphuric acid is that it is a highly dangerous chemical which have been the reason for putting a lot of lives in danger and even causing death. However, beyond this and what most people unfortunately do not know is that the chemical is the reason why we have a lot of industries nowadays that are capable of producing very useful substances in our economy.
Sulfuric acid is a viscous liquid which has colors ranging from clear to dark-brown. It is highly incompatible with other substances and materials that is why it should be handled carefully. Such examples of these substances include combustible and reducing materials, bases and aqueous solutions, light metals, heat, organic materials, miscellaneous organics, and oxidizing agents. Given these facts, one could surmise that indeed the chemical is highly capable of causing hazards. That is why, it is sad to note that the chemical receives a notorious reputation among a lot of people.
However, this should not be the reason why its contribution should be undermined. In fact, H2S04 should be given more recognition and a more positive advertisement for its potentials. What should be stressed more is its importance in the many industries that need the chemical. A lot of people do not know the fact that a lot of what we use in our everyday lives are made because of sulphuric acid. In agriculture for one, some fertilizers are made through sulfuric acid. Without these fertilizers, large production of crops would be difficult to achieve. House cleaning products we use at home from the detergents we use for our laundry, the drain opener liquids, and the likes are also made through sulfuric acid. As for automobiles that use lead batteries, these batteries are likewise made with sulphuric acid. Laboratory experiments need the acid in some of its studies. There are more other industries that use the acid aside form the ones mentioned. Industries that process printing, publishing and photography, those that produce chemicals, dyes, iron, steel and industrial explosives and those industries that refine petroleum are just some of the other examples that would be devastated with its absence.
Given these uses, it would be quite impossible to totally ban the use of the chemical. Yet, strict guidelines are being implemented in the production, selling, purchasing and distribution of the H2SO4. Of course, these rules should be followed because of the dangers that come as a package with the use of the substance. However, what should be given more emphasis is the proper usage of the acid. This is because the acid is already known to cause damage, yet only in the hands of somebody who intends to use it in a bad way or in the hands of somebody who doesn't have any idea about the proper precautionary measures that is needed to be taken in using the chemical.
