During a job interview, you have the opportunity to put your best foot forward and highlight your skills and accomplishments in order to impress a potential employer. However, keep in mind that you don't want to sound pompous during a job interview. That may be the very characteristic that lands someone else the job, so be confident without being arrogant.

Job Interview Preparation

It's vital to research and study up on the company with whom you're interviewing. The interviewer will be able to discern pretty quickly whether or not you've done your homework on the company. The interview is typically the deciding factor for whether or not you'll be hired for the job, so prior to going for the interview, you'll want to prepare properly.

  1. Take the time to study the company with whom you'll be interviewing. You want to be able to speak intelligently about the company and why you would be an excellent asset to the company.

  2. If the interviewer says, "tell me about yourself", you'll want a prepared answer to that question that doesn't reveal anything about you other than how you can benefit the company (don't give voluntary answers about age, status, or financial position)

  3. Write down the answers to the most often asked interview questions so you have time to review your answers and give them on that day

  4. Go through a mock interview with a friend or a professional business coach to give you a better feel for how to present yourself and how to answer the questions

  • Share your knowledge about the company's accomplishments and strengths - this will show the interviewer that you’re serious about working for the company

  • Leave the interviewer with the thought that you are the very best choice for the company, given your experience and skill set

  • Creatively (but truthfully) explain away any weakness (gaps) in your resume

  • t's vital to sound confident and assured, so if you tend to be nervous during an interview, consider talking with a business coach for some tips on how to interview well

  • Exhibit confidence, but in a humble manner. You’re willing to learn and work as a responsible team member. Remember the idea of first impressions? They really do make the difference!

What are your strengths/weaknesses?

Tell me a little about yourself.

What made you choose this particular career?

Why are you leaving your current employer?

What makes you a good candidate for this position?

How would you handle mistakes you or your associates make?

Give me an idea of how you would handle this situation.

A job interview can be a bit stressful, but if you prepare properly and have a professional-looking resume in hand, you’ll be better equipped to present yourself in the best light possible.
