The two healthiest things we can put in our bodies are the things that we normally don’t. Ask any doctor and they’ll agree that you should be eating five pieces of fruit and vegetables every day. Actually you should be eating more than that to ensure your body is running effectively. There is just one problem. Many of us aren’t eating any fruits or vegetables in a week let alone a day.
Fruit is very good for you for a number of reasons. Most fruit is much easier to digest than other types of food. Fruit also contains natural sugars. This natural sugar is turned quickly into energy for your body, in a much more efficient manner than refined sugars or artificial sugars.
So, why aren’t you eating any? What's your excuse? As you can plainly see fruits can improve our health in a powerful way, but we are always ways and excuses why we can't eat more of them. Here are some common excuses for not eating more fruits and vegetables, along with tips on how to overcome each one.
The “I eat out a lot” excuse - Another obstacle for some people to eat more fruits and vegetables was the fact they are always on the go and eat a lot of fast food. It is difficult finding a healthy selection on the menu of McDonald's.
-
No matter what urge you have to order that Big Mac with a large fries, go with the salad or fruit bowl. Some places even offer apple slices as a snack. All fast food chains are now offering healthy alternatives to their menu with side salads using low-fat dressing. If you're a fan of wraps or grilled chicken sandwiches, ask for extra lettuce and tomatoes.
-
Pick eating at restaurants which offer appetizing options. If you know of a restaurant that makes a delicious grilled vegetable dish, a freshly made fruit salad, or any other interesting type of entree that is filled with fruits and vegetables, make sure to visit there as much as possible.
-
On your lunch break or on your way home from work, stop at a smoothie shop. Smoothies taste great plus get you a couple of extra servings of fruit added to your daily diet. Pick a flavor with a lot of fruits added into it.
The “I’m not a fan of fruits and vegetables” excuse – You’ll often hear this excuse used an awful lot. For those of you who would rather eat chocolate or potato chips because they taste better, you’re simply not eating the right fruits and vegetables then.
-
Try a new type of fruit or vegetable every week. Next time you go grocery shopping, pick out a new fruit and try it.
-
Try adding some fruits and vegetables to foods that you already enjoy. Add some fruit like blueberries to your yogurt, oatmeal, or pancakes. Add extra vegetables to that chili, or stew that you are cooking up. You can also try dipping raw vegetables in your favorite kind of light salad dressing.
-
Add a little green to your dinner table. Make dinnertime fun again by changing around some of your embellishments and the types of dressing you use.
-
There isn’t anyone who can resist a beautifully fresh made fruit salad. Let’s face it. There’s something extremely appealing about an assortment of fruit in different shapes, colors, and flavors, all tossed together.
The “Out of sight, out of mind” excuse - If we don’t keep any fruits or vegetables anywhere near where we will see them, then we are not likely to pick up an apple for a snack instead of that box of cookies.
-
Keep ready-to-eat fruit like apples, bananas, and grapes out where you can see them. Put out your whole and dried fruit sitting out on your kitchen counter, for example. Fruit that has been cut and juice should be place in the front of your refrigerator so you see it as soon as you open its door.
-
Trying going to restaurants where you're encouraged to eat fruits and vegetables. Places that feature vegetarian dishes or a favorite little café that serves the best fruit smoothies.
